You’ve probably seen roofing companies advertise certifications. GAF Certified. GAF Preferred. GAF Master Elite. The words start to blur together. So let’s be specific about what Master Elite actually requires — and why it’s worth asking your contractor about it.
Less than 3% of roofing contractors qualify
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. Their Master Elite certification isn’t handed out at a trade show — it’s awarded to contractors who meet a specific set of criteria that most roofing companies can’t clear. Nationally, fewer than 3% of contractors hold it at any given time.
To qualify and maintain Master Elite status, a contractor must:
- Demonstrate financial stability
- Carry proper licensing for their state
- Maintain adequate insurance coverage
- Have an established track record of quality work
- Commit to ongoing training and product knowledge
GAF re-evaluates contractors regularly. You can’t buy the designation. You earn it by consistently meeting the bar, and you lose it if you stop.
What it unlocks for you as a homeowner
Master Elite status isn’t just a badge on a website. It determines what warranty options are available to you when Divided Sky installs your roof.
Standard roofing companies can offer the basic GAF manufacturer warranty — solid coverage, but limited. Master Elite contractors can offer the Golden Pledge Limited Warranty, one of the strongest coverage options in the residential roofing industry. It covers both materials and workmanship for up to 25 years, and it’s backed by GAF directly — not the contractor.
That distinction matters. If a standard contractor goes out of business in five years, their workmanship warranty goes with them. A GAF-backed warranty doesn’t depend on the contractor still being around to honor it.
Why we pursued it
Divided Sky has been serving Hays County since 2010. We pursued GAF Master Elite certification because our customers deserve access to the best warranty protection available — and because we believe in doing things the right way, not the shortcut way. The certification process confirmed what we already knew: that the standards we hold ourselves to align with what GAF holds Master Elite contractors to.
We’re also an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor — a distinction held by the top 1% of contractors nationally. Between these two certifications, our customers have access to warranty options most roofing companies simply can’t offer.
Ask your contractor before you sign anything
If you’re getting quotes for a new roof or major repair, ask every contractor: are you GAF Master Elite certified? Can you offer the Golden Pledge warranty? The answers will tell you a lot about who you’re dealing with.
