President’s Club, Master Elite, and What Roofing Certifications Actually Mean for Your Home

Walk through any neighborhood in San Marcos or Kyle after a hail season and you will see yard signs from a dozen different roofing companies. Many of them will use words like “professional,” “experienced,” “quality workmanship,” and “trusted.” These words cost nothing and mean nothing on their own.

Some certifications mean something. They require documentation, performance history, and ongoing accountability. They come with warranty benefits that uncertified contractors cannot offer. They tell you, specifically, that the company has met a standard that most companies have not.

Here is what to understand about the certifications that matter.

GAF Master Elite: What It Is and Why It Is Rare

GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. They make shingles, underlayment, ventilation products, and warranty-backed roofing systems for residential and commercial buildings. Their contractor certification program exists because they stake their own warranty reputation on the quality of the installations being done with their products.

GAF Master Elite is the highest level of their contractor certification. To earn it, a roofing contractor must:

  • Be properly licensed in their state
  • Carry adequate liability insurance and workers compensation
  • Maintain a good standing reputation with their GAF territory representative
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional development and ongoing training
  • Have no unresolved complaints through BBB or GAF

Fewer than 3% of roofing contractors in North America earn this designation. Not because the standards are impossible, but because most contractors do not pursue or maintain the relationship with their manufacturer that makes it possible.

The reason it matters to you, practically: only GAF Master Elite contractors can offer the Golden Pledge warranty. This is GAF’s strongest protection, covering both materials and workmanship for up to 25 years. It is fully transferable if you sell your home. The workmanship portion is backed by GAF itself, not just the contractor’s promise.

A contractor without Master Elite status can still install GAF shingles. But they cannot offer you that warranty. You are taking the contractor’s personal warranty on the workmanship, which is only as good as the company staying in business and honoring it.

GAF President’s Club: The Top Layer

Within the Master Elite tier, GAF further recognizes contractors based on volume, quality, and service through the President’s Club award. This is given annually to Master Elite contractors who demonstrate excellence across all categories.

It is an earned recognition, not a paid designation. The criteria are set by GAF based on job volume, customer service record, product knowledge, and consistency of quality installations.

Divided Sky holds GAF President’s Club recognition. This is not something every Master Elite contractor receives. It reflects consistent performance over time, not a one-year achievement.

What to Look for When Comparing Roofers

When you are evaluating roofing contractors in Central Texas, a useful framework goes beyond certifications to a few practical questions:

How long have they been operating in this market? A company with 10 years of completed jobs in Hays County has a track record you can check. A company that showed up last spring does not.

Do they have a physical location? Not a phone number and a website. A business address in Texas where they have a presence.

Can they provide local references? Specifically from Central Texas, within the past 12 to 18 months, that you can call.

Do they pull permits? Roof replacements in most Central Texas municipalities require permits and inspections. A contractor who suggests skipping the permit is suggesting you skip the city’s quality check on their work.

What warranty do they offer on workmanship? Materials warranties come from the manufacturer. Workmanship warranties come from the contractor. Ask specifically what they cover and for how long, in writing.

Why These Standards Matter More After Storms

After a significant hail event in Central Texas, out-of-state contractors flood the market. Some do quality work. Many do not. The pattern repeats every storm season: homeowners use a door-knocker contractor, the work looks acceptable, the contractor moves to the next market, and the problems show up 18 months later when the warranty holder is nowhere to be found.

A GAF Master Elite contractor has a relationship with GAF that they cannot afford to jeopardize. Their certification depends on doing the work correctly, because complaints go back to GAF and affect their standing. That accountability structure changes the incentive, compared to a contractor with no ongoing relationship with anyone except their own check.

Divided Sky’s Certifications

Divided Sky holds GAF Master Elite certification and President’s Club recognition. These are maintained annually through consistent performance and manufacturer relationship standards. We install GAF systems and offer the Golden Pledge extended warranty on qualifying installations.

We also hold Best of Hays County recognition, which has been awarded consistently since 2019. We were named San Marcos Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year in 2021. We were included in the Inc. 5000 in 2022.

These are not things we say to fill a page. They are the record of a company that has been doing this work in Central Texas for years and intends to be here for many more.
