If you’ve been getting roofing quotes in Central Texas, you’ve probably seen contractors mention GAF certification. What most homeowners don’t realize is that there are several tiers, and they’re not equal.
GAF Master Elite is the top tier. Fewer than 3% of roofing contractors in North America hold it. Divided Sky is one of them.
Here’s what that actually requires and why it matters.
The Difference Between “GAF Certified” and “GAF Master Elite”
GAF is the largest roofing manufacturer in North America. They run a contractor certification program with multiple levels. The entry-level certification doesn’t require much. The Master Elite designation is a different conversation.
To earn Master Elite status, a contractor must:
- Be properly licensed in their state
- Carry adequate insurance — both liability and workers’ compensation
- Demonstrate a strong reputation in their market
- Commit to ongoing training to stay current on installation standards
GAF audits these requirements. A contractor can’t just apply and pay a fee. They have to demonstrate they actually meet the criteria.
Why It Matters When You’re Filing an Insurance Claim
After a hail or storm event, most homeowners in Central Texas go through their insurance company. The insurance adjuster writes a scope of work. A contractor bids to that scope.
Where homeowners sometimes run into problems is when the contractor they hire isn’t familiar with how GAF materials and installation standards interact with insurance documentation. A Master Elite contractor has the training and the manufacturer relationship to navigate that process correctly.
It also affects warranties. GAF offers their strongest warranties — including the Golden Pledge, which covers both materials and workmanship — only through Master Elite contractors. If warranty coverage matters to you, the contractor’s certification tier is the deciding factor.
What It Doesn’t Mean
GAF Master Elite status isn’t a guarantee that every job goes perfectly. It’s a signal about how a contractor operates. Proper licensing, real insurance, trained installers, and a commitment to doing the work right. Those are the underlying things the designation reflects.
When you’re choosing a contractor after a storm, those fundamentals matter more than a low bid. A job done wrong has to be done twice. In Central Texas, where hail season comes every spring, you want a roof that’s installed to last.
