Most homeowners think about gutters when they’re overflowing. The reality is, gutters are a critical component of your roof system — and when they fail, the damage extends well beyond the gutters themselves.
What Gutters Actually Do
A roof’s job is to shed water. Gutters complete that job — they collect that water at the eave and route it away from the foundation. When gutters are missing, clogged, or improperly installed, water doesn’t disappear. It has to go somewhere.
Where it typically goes:
- Down the fascia board (the trim behind the gutter) — rotting the wood and creating an entry point for moisture into the soffit and attic
- Against the foundation — where repeated wetting and drying cycles crack and undermine concrete over time
- Through the soil near the foundation — creating differential settling and the structural problems that come with it
- Into basement or crawl space areas if the home has them
None of these are small problems. All of them are more expensive to fix than functioning gutters.
Gutter Failure Modes in Central Texas
Central Texas gutters face specific challenges:
Debris from cedar, live oak, and pecan
Central Texas trees drop leaves, seedpods, and small branches year-round — not just in fall. Gutters can fill to capacity within weeks in areas with significant tree coverage. Clogged gutters don’t drain; they hold water, which adds weight, accelerates rust and corrosion, and eventually causes the gutter to pull away from the fascia.
Thermal expansion
Central Texas sees temperatures from the teens to 105°F+ in a given year. Aluminum gutters expand and contract significantly with this range. If sections weren’t installed with proper allowances for expansion, seams separate over time and joints fail.
Storm volume
Central Texas storms are not gentle. A significant spring storm can dump several inches in a short window — volumes that overwhelm undersized gutters and expose improper pitch or inadequate drainage points.
Signs Your Gutters Need Attention
- Water staining or erosion directly below the gutter line
- Gutter pulling away from the fascia (visible gap or sag)
- Water visible over the gutter lip during rain (overflow, not just during storms)
- Peeling paint or rotting wood on fascia boards
- Plants growing in gutters (yes, this happens — and it means they haven’t drained in a long time)
When It’s Time for New Gutters
